Oeko-Tex Standard 100, developed by a group of European textile institutes, is a global testing and accreditation program for the screening of harmful substances in textiles. Oeko-Tex certified products are tested and are guaranteed to contain no harmful substances, including toxins and irritants.
The requirements of this certificate are not only related to textiles and yarns, but also to prints, motifs and accessories. The requirements are strict for textiles that are in direct contact with the skin and are even more stringent for textiles for newborns and children up to 3 years old.
Some examples of controlled substances:
- pesticides and defoliants
- pentachlorophenol and tetrachlorophenol, used as preservatives, as well as orthophenylphenol and organic preservatives and pesticides TBT, TPhT and DBT
- heavy metals: chromium, cobalt, nickel, copper, cadmium, antimony, arsenic, lead and mercury
- special dyes, azo dyes, pigments and amines, which are suspected to be carcinogenic
- asbestos fibers
In addition to these substances, there are also restrictions on the release of dyes and the evaporation of organic compounds.
According to the Oeko-Tex certificate, these substances cannot be found in clothing, which means that manufacturers cannot, in turn, use them in their production. Thus, the Oeko-Tex certificate is not only a sign of guarantee and trust for our children, but also for the environment.
